How long does it take to learn Chinese?
On our side, we strive to provide you with a meticulously crafted learning content, which progresses from 0 to advanced in the most logical and 'hassle-free' manner. Our experienced teachers have met learners from all backgrounds and walks of life, and we can say with confidence: everyone can learn Chinese!
In general, it takes our students 1-2 months to be able to hold basic Chinese conversations. When it comes to learning Chinese, the learning curve is quite steep: most students find the Chinese pronunciation and tones difficult in the beginning, but as you get used to these 2 aspects, learning becomes easier, and it eventually becomes about practicing as much as possible, and gradually expanding your vocabulary and grammar patterns.
Is it difficult to learn Chinese characters?
And if you're learning Chinese to communicate, you don't have to learn thousands of characters. The literacy standard in China is around 3500 characters, but learning just about 1000 will get you a long way in all your everyday tasks.
Besides, once you start learning, you will discover what a marvelous form of written language the Chinese characters are. Each character carries a precise meaning in a short and elegant form. Most characters contain the 'meaning' part, called radical, and there are just over 200 of them. Once you learn the most common ones, you will start discovering logic in every character: for example, the character 好 (good) is made of a woman (女) and child (子), and most verbs related to hand gestures have a hand (手) in them.
When put together, Chinese characters work like lego blocks to help you build more complex ideas: 手 (hand) + 机 (machine) = 手机 (mobile phone).
